Neighbors, I would like you to know about the environmental and natural history tours conducted aboard my Skipjack the Dee of St. Mary's. The purpose is to impress upon folks that the bay and its tributaries are a treasure worth preserving. Our pace on the water is slow, enabling passengers to relax, enjoy the surroundings and restore some peace of mind. We have worked for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation within three Southern Maryland schools systems. Environmental education and natural History classes are conducted on the Potomac, Patuxent and St. Mary's rivers. Most of our classes are conducted from April through mid-November. Our trip deals with the ecology of the bay system by looking at the oyster and the blue crab. We look at the oyster and its relationship with other animals. The oyster is a good indicator of the health and vitality of the bay. The blue crab shows us how prolific a species can be when conditions are favorable to its survival. The Skipjack is Coast Guard certified for 38 people. We suggest parties of 20 to 25 which allows maximum 'hands-participation' when dredging oysters and hauling crab pots. Normally we "drudge" some oysters and give a crash course on "arster shucking" We can follow the lesson plan as closely or as loosely as you desire. We also split groups so we can accommodate fairly large numbers. Overnight camping and cabin rentals can he arranged at Camp Merryelande on St. George Island. Contact them at 1-800-382-1073 or 301-862-3301. We are equipped with a cellular phone for important phone calls. We recommend you schedule six months to a year in advance. Smooth sailing,Jack
